What is the pelvic floor?
Pelvic pain is no laughing matter. The pelvic region is an important part of the body that serves several functions. Pelvic pain can occur at any time during your menstrual cycle, during pregnancy, after giving birth, or as a result of an underlying condition. Some pelvic conditions can cause painful intercourse or infertility.
Dealing with pelvic pain on your own can be confusing and frightening, but it can be addressed and possibly resolved through pelvic floor rehabilitation. Postpartum pelvic pain, pain after abdominal surgery, dyspareunia, and endometriosis are some of the most common pelvic conditions treated by our physiotherapists.
Pelvic floor rehabilitation is a type of physiotherapy that has been shown to help with a variety of pelvic pain problems. While many people believe that this type of therapy is only for women, it actually benefits all genders!
Are you expecting a child? Here’s why you should consider pelvic floor therapy.
Are you expecting a child? Pregnancy is a happy and exciting time for most women! However, the body undergoes numerous changes as it grows an entirely new human. Pregnant women have different postures, more pelvic floor stress, and their ligaments stretch and thicken. Some of these changes may be unpleasant, even painful.
In addition to newfound back pain, pelvic floor issues, and muscular weakness, urinary incontinence and difficulty activating core muscles can occur. Fortunately, pelvic floor therapy can assist your body in adjusting to these changes.
PhysioPlus Health Group uses a variety of techniques, such as massage therapy and pelvic floor treatment, to make pregnancy and delivery as comfortable as possible. Our physiotherapy clinic’s goal is to prepare your body for the journey ahead so you can focus on getting ready to welcome your new baby into the world!
Why is pelvic floor physiotherapy important after childbirth?
Whether you have a vaginal or c-section delivery, your pelvic floor physiotherapist is an important member of your postpartum recovery team. You will almost certainly require their assistance in order for your body to recover quickly and correctly.
The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) now recommends routine physiotherapy consultations after 6 weeks postpartum, but this is not yet the standard practice. Pelvic floor physiotherapy is essential for preventing and treating a variety of pelvic disorders, including pelvic organ prolapse, urinary conditions, pelvic pain, and diastasis recti (abdominal separation).
Our bodies go through a lot during pregnancy and delivery. Muscles are stretched, joints are strained, scar tissue forms, and our bodies change physically. The pelvic floor, the pelvic and lower back joint, and the abdominal/core muscles are the most affected areas of our bodies. A pelvic health physiotherapist has received specialized training in assessing and treating postpartum women.
Your pelvic PT will perform an in-depth examination of your pelvic floor muscles, pelvis, lower back, and core/DRA. Your physiotherapist will then be able to walk you through an individualized exercise program designed to restore your core and pelvic floor.
Even if you are not experiencing urinary incontinence or pain, working with a pelvic health PT to learn how to restore your muscles to avoid future problems is beneficial. Incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse are major risk factors for childbirth.
A pelvic health physiotherapist can also assist you in returning to your postpartum fitness goals in a safe manner. Certain exercises, if performed too soon or incorrectly, can aggravate conditions such as DRA or prolapse. A pelvic health PT can guide you through the safest practices for your body, allowing you to get back to doing what you love!
