Whiplash Injuries and Treatment

Physiotherapist Treating Patient after Motor Vehicle Accident

Whiplash is the most common neck injury after a car accident. It happens when there’s a sudden and forceful back-and-forth or side-to-side movement of the neck that damages the muscles and ligaments in your neck.

Common symptoms of whiplash include neck pain or stiffness, headaches, tenderness in the neck, shoulders, and upper back, and tingling and numbness in your arms.

Chiropractic treatment for whiplash after a car accident includes a variety of techniques including hands-on treatment to release tight muscles and stiff joints, exercise therapy, laser, ultrasound or acupuncture.

At your initial visit, our chiropractor will ask you questions about your whiplash injury and pain, do a thorough physical exam, and then come up with a treatment plan that will give you pain relief and help you achieve your goals.

If you have questions please contact our clinic today.

Lower back Injuries and Sciatica Treatment

Lower back pain and sciatica are two of the most common injuries that people have after a car accident. Symptoms of lower back injuries or sciatica can include lower back pain and stiffness, muscle tenderness, and spasm, as well as sharp or shooting pain down your leg.

Symptoms often appear within a few minutes or hours after your accident, but in some cases, they can start a few days after the accident and are often made worse with certain movements or activities.

Chiropractic treatment for lower back injuries and sciatica includes a wide variety of techniques such as soft tissue release, massage therapy, exercise therapy, laser, ultrasound, and acupuncture.

After a detailed assessment and physical exam, your physiotherapist or chiropractor will create a customized plan of care that will give you relief and help you achieve your goals.

Concussions & Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries Treatment

Concussions are caused in a car accident by a direct hit to your head or by a force to your body that causes your head to rapidly move in different directions. These rapid forces cause trauma to the brain, which is called a concussion.

Common symptoms include headaches, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, changes in vision, altered balance, difficulties with concentration or memory, and sensitivity to light.

With the right treatment, most people with a concussion can recover fully and get back to their normal routine.

Chiropractic treatment after a concussion focuses on a gradual return to cognitive and physical activity that helps minimize symptoms, promote recovery, and help you regain your balance, coordination, and focus, so you can get back to all of your usual activities.

It may also include hands-on treatment of your neck because many people with a concussion also have whiplash.

In some cases, referral to a vestibular physiotherapist, occupational therapist, neurologist, or optometrist is needed to address persistent symptoms.

Your chiropractor will guide you all along your path to recovery and ensure you get the medical care you need.

If you have questions please contact our clinic today.

Trauma and Fracture Treatment

Broken bones or fractures are common after motor vehicle accidents. While some fractures require surgery to realign the broken bones, some are treated with a brace or cast that immobilizes the area and allows the bone to heal.

After your surgery (or once your cast is removed) most people will experience significant pain, stiffness, and weakness making it difficult to function normally, which is why it’s important to see a physiotherapist.

Chiropractic treatment after a fracture is very important to ensure you regain full mobility, function, and strength in the affected area.

Bone stimulators can be used to help speed up bone healing or to help a bone that is not healing as quickly as expected.

FAQs

What are the symptoms of a whiplash injury?

The typical symptoms of a whiplash injury include neck pain, neck stiffness, headaches, tenderness in the shoulders and upper back, fatigue, and tingling or numbness in one or both arms. You might also experience dizziness, problems with your balance or ringing in your ears.

What is the best whiplash treatment?

Once your doctor has ruled out serious injury, you can use heat or cold applied to the neck for 10 – 15 minutes every 3 hours. Physiotherapy treatment will help relieve your pain, restore your neck range of motion and speed up the healing process.

How long does it take to recover from whiplash?

Everyone is different when it comes to recovering from whiplash. It will depend on the exact nature or your specific accident and injury. Most people do recover from whiplash within a few weeks, but others may take several months to get better. Physiotherapy treatment can help to speed up recovery from injury and prevent long term damage.
