Fibromyalgia

"I couldn’t be happier with the results."

I had a minor shoulder injury which led to chronic pain for several years. After a few visits to PhysioPlus, Lauren (Physiotherapist) and Jonathan (RMT) were able to relieve the pain. They were both very effective and professional, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Thanks to you both!

I have gone from chronic excruciating pain in my upper back as well as chronic shoulder rotator-cuff pain to functioning normally again. I 100% recommend this full-circle rehab/therapy place to anyone who has a major sports injury or chronic pain from overuse type issues/injuries.

FIND THE FIBROMYALGIA RELIEF YOU’VE BEEN LOOKING FOR

LIVING WITH FIBROMYALGIA? WE CAN HELP

It’s natural to feel some pain from time to time. You may feel tired after exercising so much, or you may accidentally stub your toe on a piece of furniture. Most of the time, you’re in a position to shake it off or take ibuprofen to continue your day.

If the pain you feel is widespread and persistent, it will most likely not decrease despite your best efforts. This can have a huge impact on your life that anti-inflammatory drugs just won’t cure.

If you have chronic pain combined with fatigue, mood swings, or erratic sleep patterns, you may have a more severe physiological disorder known as fibromyalgia.

Sometimes it’s hard to know if you have fibromyalgia because the signs can vary from person to person. Our treatment approach can help to relieve your fibromyalgia pain.

If you’ve already been diagnosed, or if you think you may be dealing with fibromyalgia, please contact us today to schedule an appointment with one of our Bloor West Village and The Kingsway physiotherapists.

How will physiotherapy help me find relief?

Fibromyalgia-Physioplus-Health-Group-Toronto-On

Because fibromyalgia is not a disorder, but rather a series of symptoms, there is no single, safe treatment for the condition. However, physiotherapy has been shown to help people effectively control their symptoms.

Doctors will usually prescribe a form of pain medicine or antidepressant to manage symptoms; however, these treatments do not resolve the chronic nature of the disease or the loss of function that chronic pain and depression usually cause.

At PhysioPlus Health Group, we will provide successful care for both managing symptoms over the long term and restoring the full function of your body.

When you arrive for your initial appointment, your Bloor West Village and Kingsway physiotherapist will evaluate your physical capacity, assess your medical history, and address your current symptoms in order to design a treatment plan that meets your specific needs.

Physiotherapy will usually begin with pain-relieving techniques designed to provide relief and facilitate healing. This may include the use of trigger point therapy, massage, stretching, electrical stimulation, or other therapeutic methods that our physiotherapist feels may be helpful for your recovery.

Treatment can include active therapies, such as flexibility exercises, range-of-motion movements, and gentle exercises. It may also include education about self-management strategies, breathing, and relaxation exercises.

We recognize that sometimes taking the first step toward pain relief can be the hardest part. That’s why we’re here to reassure you that you’re in good hands when you come to our Bloor West Village and The Kingsway physiotherapists.

What should I know about fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is an umbrella word used to identify the condition of a person with a certain combination of symptoms.

While the precise causes of fibromyalgia are still uncertain, some medical professionals agree that it could be triggered by an overactive, sympathetic nervous system, or the portion of your body that causes ‘fight or flight’ reactions.

This hypothesis makes sense, as people appear to experience their first signs of fibromyalgia after experiencing a physical or emotionally painful incident, although it has never been clinically confirmed.

Some people who develop fibromyalgia begin with chronic stress or depression, while other symptoms build up over time.

Fibromyalgia often appears to affect more women than men, and the risk of experiencing it increases when you have a family member with the same disease.

The most common symptoms of fibromyalgia include:

  • Forgetfulness or disorientation
  • Fluctuations in mood
  • Fatigue
  • Tender areas of the body
  • Chronic and/or sharp muscle pains
  • Sensitivity to touch/numbness
  • Disrupted sleep cycles/irregular sleep schedules
  • Nausea
