Starting physiotherapy can feel overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time working with a practitioner in your own home.
In-home physiotherapy offers a comfortable, familiar environment where your care is tailored specifically to your needs. It allows you to rehabilitate in the space that matters most to you, while receiving focused, one-on-one support. In this post, we will walk you through what to expect during your first in-home physiotherapy session with one of our clinicians, how to prepare, and how to book!
What happens during the first in-home physiotherapy session?
When getting started with your first in-home physiotherapy session, your physiotherapist will:
- Take a detailed history. Here, your physiotherapist will ask about your symptoms and the nature of the injury. Importantly, also focus on what goals you have and what is important for you to achieve.
- Perform objective tests. This may include assessing the range of motion, strength and balance. This lets us know how you are able to move in your day to day environment.
- Pinpoint what is happening. Using the information collected, the root cause of the issue can be identified.
- Talk about treatment. This is done as a team – you will both decide on hands-on therapy, exercises, goals, and whatever else can help you get back to the things you want to do.
- Make a plan. Here, we can begin to identify how long recovery may take, steps to prevent injuries in the future, and how often care is taking place.

How long does the first in-home physiotherapy session last?
The first assessment is often the longest, as it allows us to identify the nature of your injury, perform assessments, and set the stage for recovery.
The first assessment is approximately one hour in length. Follow-up sessions can range in duration depending on your needs; however range from 30-60 minutes in length. The exact timing depends on your condition, complexity, and what goals you and your physiotherapist decide together.
Do I need to prepare my home for physiotherapy?
You may be wondering how your house could be used for a physiotherapy session. Clients often wonder how it is possible without setting aside treatment space and equipment. However, our team is skilled in their creativity with common household items! Even simple items such as a chair or a wall are enough to get started. Some simple preparation can help make the session smoother:
- Clear a comfortable space for movement. This can be a living room or a common area. If you have a home gym or workout area, let your physiotherapist know!
- Make any relevant documents accessible. This can include any medical history, referral notes, imaging, or medication lists.
- Anything else you think may be important for your physiotherapist to know.

What should I wear for in-home physiotherapy?
There are no strict clothing requirements for in-home physiotherapy. Here are a few guidelines generally suggested:
- Opt for comfortable and loose fitting clothes that allow you to move freely.
- Wear athletic shoes. These can be shoes that you wear day to day, or shoes reserved for activity.
- Allow for access to the treatment area, within your comfort.

Do physiotherapists bring their own equipment for in-home visits?
Yes! Our team brings their own equipment for in-home visits. One big benefit of in-home physiotherapy with our team is that our therapists come prepared. This may include providing equipment, taping supplies, or products. Our team can use household items like chairs, walls or small objects to help with exercises.
If you do own your own equipment, like exercise bands, therapy balls, or other aids, let us know on your first visit! Your physiotherapist may incorporate them into your home program. Our team can also utilize home/ condo gym spaces in your rehabilitation process.
