How will dry needling help with my pain?
These treatment methods are used by our licensed Bloor West Village and Kingsway physiotherapists and chiropractors to relieve pain.
It is not acupuncture, although it is a common misconception. In fact, dry needling is based on modern scientific studies of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems.
Although there are some similarities, it is strictly based on the principles of Western medicine and research.
When performing this treatment, a physiotherapist or chiropractor will insert a sterile needle through the skin, into the underlying tendons, ligaments, or muscles that have been affected to relieve pain, reduce muscle tension, and improve mobility.
It simply provides an environment that enhances the body’s ability to heal and ultimately reduces pain in the process.
WILL DRY NEEDLING CAUSE MORE PAIN?
In these procedures, most of our patients report feeling little or no pain.
Our highly trained Bloor West Village and Kingsway physiotherapists and chiropractors know how to make the procedure as painless as possible, but when the needle is applied, some patients may still experience a “twitch response.”
This is equivalent to a quick cramp or pain in the muscle. Patients sometimes report feeling some muscle pain within 24-48 hours of this treatment, which usually goes away on its own.
The sore muscles can be treated at home by applying ice and/or heat packs and drinking plenty of fluids.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DRY NEEDLING?
There are tons of musculoskeletal conditions that can be treated with this treatment.
At our Bloor West Village and Kingsway physiotherapy practice, we have also found that the vast majority of our patients achieved the pain-free outcomes they were looking for when our conventional exercise-based therapies were combined with dry needling.
Our physiotherapists and chiropractors will let you know if dry needling is the right course of treatment for you, but only after a thorough assessment to determine the severity of your condition!
