FAQs

Can back pain be cured using painkillers?

Painkillers can help some people deal with the excruciating pain and discomfort that low-back pain can plague us with.

However, it doesn’t work for everyone. Even if it does work for you, it’s usually not recommended to use painkillers for prolonged periods of time and it’s best to discuss painkillers with your doctor.

Moreover, taking painkillers for back pain only masks the pain rather than getting to the root of the problem. It’s more of a “band-aid” solution to the problem.

Low back pain can have a variety of interplaying causes behind it which won’t be addressed by simply swallowing painkillers.

That’s why having the expertise of a physiotherapist or chiropractor is vital in understanding the true reasoning behind your pain.

Physiotherapists and chiropractors have specialized knowledge and tests which can determine the cause of your back pain and the best course of action to provide you with relief.

Is my back pain a serious issue?

Back pain is the most common chronic pain issue that people suffer from and is also the number one cause of disability in Canada.

It’s important to understand that back pain can have countless causes and often there is more than one cause.

Most importantly, back pain is rarely a cause for concern. Your doctor, physiotherapist, or chiropractor is specially trained to be able to determine if your back pain stems from a serious issue, such can cancer, vascular compromise, or other serious pathologies.

When back pain is resulting from a dangerous source, there are typically so-called “hallmark signs” that your healthcare professionals can identify.

Be sure to visit a physiotherapist or chiropractor to find out how they can help you conquer your back pain or if it’s a very rare case in which you need more urgent care.

What is the most common reason for back pain?

As explained previously, back pain has many different sources and usually isn’t because of just one cause.

The most common reasons for back pain, however, are usually prolonged poor postures due to work and lifestyle as well as straining the back by doing too much.

Due to office jobs, standing jobs, or not having a job, some of us spend too much time in the same posture throughout the day.

The spine is designed to move and by not moving it adequately, you’re depriving your spine of what it needs, and this can lead to back pain.

On the other hand, just like your knee shoulder tendons or ankle ligaments, doing “too much, too soon” can also cause an acute strain on the back.

If you haven’t lifted anything more than 10 pounds over the past few months and then suddenly ask your back to move 20lb boxes to your new apartment, chances are your back may not like it!

Physiotherapists and chiropractors are experts in understanding and managing different causes of back pain, so make an appointment today to start your journey to recovery.

How long will it take for my back pain to get better?

Different causes of back pain need different therapies, different exercises, and different recovery paths.

On top of that, everyone is different. Your back is different from everyone else’s back. Additionally, back pain is a result of a multitude of different reasons.

That’s why predicting the recovery rate of back pain is next to impossible.

With that said, most back pain can resolve fully or almost fully within 2-8 weeks. This is quite a wide range of time, and rightly so. Your recovery depends on many things:

Age, sex, work, anatomy, diligence with exercises, stress, sleep, nutrition, and so much more.
