What Are Bone Stimulators and How Do They Work?

Have you experienced a fracture that hasn’t been healing properly? If so, you may benefit from a treatment known as a bone growth stimulator.

Bone stimulation is a form of electrical stimulation that stimulates bone healing to help a fracture (broken bone) heal.

It’s typically used in the following cases:

  • when you have a fracture (broken bone) that isn’t healing on its own (nonunion fractures), osteoarthritis, and osteoporosis.
  • by athletes who have a fracture to help speed up the healing process and reduce their downtime so they can return to their sport faster
  • when you have a fracture (broken bone) after a car accident to help speed up healing

Conditions that bone stimulators treat

Bone stimulators promote the bone growth process by helping the body repair tissue and increase cell formation, which leads to improved bone density. The conditions that can benefit from this type of treatment, include the following:

Nonunion fractures

Most broken bones can heal independently. However, in some cases, a nonunion fracture occurs, which typically happens when your bone doesn’t have enough blood flow or stability to heal. Nonunion fractures are also more likely to happen if they are caused by a severe injury, such as a car crash, which reduces blood supply to the affected area.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a bone disease that occurs when bone mineral density and bone mass decline or when the strength and structure of bones begin to change. This process can increase the risk of fractures.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that develops when joint tissues break down over time. This is the most common type of arthritis and typically occurs in older people. Osteoarthritis can cause joint pain and stiffness, especially with inactivity.

HOW TO BONE STIMULATORS WORK?

A bone stimulator is a device that generates an electromagnetic field to stimulate bone growth. It’s a non-invasive, and pain-free treatment that uses a form of energy to stimulate the cells responsible for bone formation and repair.

Bone stimulators have been shown in pre-clinical trials to help the body’s own healing process. Clinical studies show success rates as high as 89 %
