"It's a great clinic - Sarah is my physio and she has been awesome. "

It’s a great clinic – Sarah is my physio and she has been awesome. She is really supportive and got me through a concussion, and continues to be a huge help.

- Miriam G.

"I highly recommend for concussion physiotherapy!"

I have been coming to PhysioPlus for various therapies over the years and have always been pleased with the effects of the services. Most recently, I became a “regular” after I suffered a concussion and received physiotherapy. I would highly recommend

"got me back to full activity."

Jen was great to work with. Had no idea what a vestibular therapist did but helped work through my post concussion issues and got me back to full activity.

The most recent evidence is showing us that absolute rest beyond the first 24 – 48 hours (in most cases) is no longer considered the best approach to concussion care. The current research is showing us that early intervention of various therapies can significantly improve recovery, and has led to a more active approach to concussion treatment.

Understanding Concussion Rehabilitation

Our certified clinicians have specialized training in the treatment and rehabilitation of acute concussions as well as persistent symptoms post concussion such as headaches, balance/dizziness issues, visual disturbances, reading difficulties, trouble concentrating, and challenges with daily activities.

Your practitioner will perform a thorough medical history and physical examination and will recommend the most effective treatment approach to meet your needs. Your treatment plan may include hands-on treatment and whiplash treatment, vestibular rehabilitation, visual rehabilitation, diet and nutrition, exercise therapy, or education and reassurance.

Occupational therapy treatment may focus on managing fatigue, improving concentration, stress management/coping strategies, and activity planning to maintain meaningful daily routines.

For very complex cases, we also have a referral network of specialists that can be accessed should your case require additional care.

We provide modifications and communicate with teachers, family physicians, and coaches to facilitate a safe return to the activities our patients need, want, and love to do.

We offer a stepwise reintegration into school, work, and sports through a process involving a graduated reintroduction of mental, physical, and sport-specific activities while assessing symptoms and recovery.

How can concussion treatment benefit me?

Physiotherapy treatment for concussions can include hand-on treatment to reduce neck pain and headaches often associated with a concussion, specific stretches, and even eye motion training to reduce headaches and nausea following a concussion. Physiotherapy programs for concussion often build in vestibular therapy, which helps you orient yourself during periods of lightheadedness or loss of balance. To encourage this your physiotherapist will introduce you to specialized activities, including fixing your gaze at a certain point in the distance, or using simple movements to stabilize your core and limbs.

We offer a step-wise program for reintegration into school, work, and sports through a process involving a gradual reintroduction of mental, physical, and sport-specific activities while carefully assessing symptoms, performance, and recovery.

Occupational Therapy Treatment for Concussions

Occupational therapy treatment for concussions focuses on how concussion symptoms affect your daily life and routines. We help you manage challenges like difficulty concentrating, memory problems, fatigue, sensitivity to light or noise, and the frustration that can come with these changes.

Through personalized strategies, pacing techniques, and practical adaptations, OT supports you in returning to school, work, sports, and social activities safely and gradually. We can also work with your family, teachers, and other care providers to create a coordinated plan, helping you regain independence and confidence while you recover.

Return To Learn and Work

We provide rehabilitation programs for individuals experiencing symptoms that affect their ability to perform at school or work. Throughout the recovery process, we facilitate a step-wise reintegration back into the school and work environment through modifications and communication with physicians, teachers, and school administrative staff.

Return To Play

Our step-wise process gradually introduces the athlete back into their specific sporting environment. We reintroduce varying degrees of physical and sport specific activity, while carefully assessing symptoms, performance and recovery. Physical and cognitive tests are used to confirm their level of recovery and ability to safely return to full play.

Frequently asked questions

Are PT treatments uncomfortable?

Good communication with our therapist will help minimize any discomfort. We want you on your way to quick pain relief and back to normal activities.

Physiotherapy is not meant to hurt, but to relieve pain! There is a chance, however, as you restore your mobility that your pain levels will fluctuate. You might experience some temporary soreness from using muscles that are weakened or recovering.

Rest assured that this is a normal response to physiotherapy treatment and not a cause for concern.

Do I need a doctor’s referral to get physiotherapy treatment?

No, you don’t need a referral in order to receive treatment. Some insurance companies may ask for a doctor’s referral in order for them to reimburse you.. Call your insurance provider to confirm details.

How can I begin treatments with a physiotherapist?

Our clinic in Bloor West Village and The Kingsway prides itself on providing a positive, encouraging environment with well-trained, friendly staff. We are confident in our ability to help you reach your goals and live a pain-free life.

You have the right to receive physiotherapy at any facility you choose. At PhysioPlus Health Group, you will receive the highest quality care while achieving the results you are in search of.

How can OT help me after a concussion or injury?

Occupational therapy is essential in the recovery process following a concussion or injury. Our therapists work closely with you to restore your independence, rebuild daily living skills, and improve your confidence. Whether you need help with self-care activities (like dressing or bathing), regaining cognitive functions such as memory and attention, or managing pain and fatigue, OT creates a personal, step-by-step plan tailored to your needs. We may also recommend adaptive equipment or modify your environment to maximize your safety and comfort at home or work.
