Functional Training

"I'd recommend this place to anyone!"

I’m so glad I had my therapy here. Martin was so patient and very knowledgeable about the issues I’m having on my lower back. The exercises he gave really helped me alleviate my pain and has been a great improvement. I will surely comeback and recommend this place to anyone who needed physiotherapy.

"Martin is the best!"

I had a great experience with Martin Petrov. I came to see him in January of 2023. I was in bad shape and could barely walk. By June/July I was able to walk with or without a cane. Besides knowing exactly what exercises to do at home and during my visits Martin was also very encouraging and this made a lot of difference to me. I would recommend Martin to anyone. I have had other physios but Martin is the best.

"Best physio place i have ever been too."

Great friendly environment I would recommend this physio place. Best physio place i have ever been too.

WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL TRAINING?

Functional training is a form of supervised exercise that we offer here for those individuals who would like professional guidance and training towards returning to a certain exercise, activity or movement goal.

Functional exercises can be used to help facilitate your rehabilitation and recovery by helping individuals recover from injuries or surgeries by promoting safe and effective movement patterns.

The GOAL is to integrate strength, flexibility, and coordination into purposeful movements specifically tailored to help you achieve your goal or goals. This integration is particularly valuable for individuals recovering from surgery or injury as it helps bridge the gap between isolated exercises and functional activities.

Functional training involves:

  • Multi-joint and large muscle group movements (not just the injured muscle or joint)
  • Activity or sport specific movements and increasing muscular strength
  • Core, balance and stability training (since it involves more full body movements)
  • Integration of a Fitness Component (as it involves endurance, cardio, strength, and mobility)

Training in this manner, with one of our physiotherapists, can help ensure the proper use of form and technique to:

  • Reduce the risk of injury or reinjury as you  get active again
  • Get better results: maximize the benefits of functional training (listed below)
  • Achieve your goals faster

IS FUNCTIONAL TRAINING FOR ME?

Functional training is for individuals of all ages and abilities as it promotes safe and effective movements. This type of training helps to improve strength, flexibility, balance, coordination and endurance. It can also help increase the range of motion in a joint (which is often limited after an injury or surgery).

Additionally, functional training can be designed to mimic activities that you enjoy in everyday life. This could include activities such as your favorite sport, gardening, golfing or even picking up a grandchild!

This type of exercise can also help improve postural awareness and body mechanics while having fun. For those who have been sedentary for some time or have difficulty performing isolated exercises (such as on a  machine) functional training is an excellent and enjoyable way to get active again.

Functional training can also be an important part of the rehabilitation process for those recovering from injury or surgery.

It helps bridge the gap between rehab/physio exercises and functional activities by promoting safe and effective movements. This type of exercise can help improve strength, flexibility, balance, coordination and endurance while mimicking activities that people enjoy in everyday life. Here at PhysioPlus we are here to provide you with professional guidance and support as you work towards achieving your goals!

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF FUNCTIONAL TRAINING?

Benefits of our Functional Training Programme include:

  • Increased Strength: Functional training targets multiple muscle groups simultaneously, helping to build overall strength.
  • Enhanced Stability and Balance: Many functional exercises require engagement of stabilizing muscles.
  • Muscle Activation: Functional training emphasizes the activation of various muscle groups in a coordinated manner.
  • Task-Specific Training: Functional exercises often mimic real-life movements, making them more relevant to daily activities.
  • Pain Management: Functional training can be tailored to individual needs and pain levels. The focus on controlled movements and progressive loading can help manage pain during the recovery process.
  • Psychological Benefits: Engaging in functional training can have positive effects on mental well-being. Achieving small functional milestones can boost confidence and motivation during the recovery journey.
  • Prevention of Re-injury: Functional training addresses the body as a whole, helping to identify and correct movement imbalances. This can reduce the risk of developing secondary injuries or complications related to altered movement patterns.
  • Adaptability: Functional exercises can be adapted to suit the specific needs and limitations of individuals recovering from different types of surgeries. This adaptability allows for a personalized and progressive approach to rehabilitation.

HOW IS FUNCTIONAL TRAINING DIFFERENT THAN PERSONAL TRAINING OR GOING TO THE GYM?

Functional training involves activity-specific movements and training to help achieve a functional goal…..such as kicking a soccer ball or picking up a grandchild. Here, at PhysioPlus, our Functional Training program, uses a step-wise approach of movement patterns that ensure the person is moving correctly and reducing re-injury while training for an activity specific goal. This is performed under the supervision of a physiotherapist and is incorporated into the rehabilitation process.

Personal training is typically performed by a personal trainer and is a broader type of training with generalized goals, such as increasing one’s overall strength or losing weight.

WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL FITNESS?

Functional fitness refers to a type of exercise and training that aims to improve the performance of everyday activities by focusing on movements that are natural and essential for daily life. The primary goal of functional fitness is to enhance the overall functionality of the body, making it more capable of performing various tasks efficiently and safely.

Unlike traditional workouts that may isolate specific muscle groups or focus on aesthetics, functional fitness emphasizes movements that mimic real-life activities such as bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, and rotating. These exercises often involve multiple joints and muscle groups working together, promoting better coordination, balance, flexibility, and strength.

Functional fitness is beneficial for individuals of all fitness levels and ages. It can help prevent injuries, improve posture, enhance mobility, and increase overall functional capacity. Moreover, the emphasis on natural movements makes it applicable to the activities of daily living, making it a practical approach to fitness for many people.
